Saw this question this morning, now I’ve had some time to think about it I can try to give some ideas. In the story, loyalty (especially family loyalty) is powerful and the consequences for being disloyal are much greater than they would be today. Several characters die for it. Tybalt dies defending his family’s honor, Mercutio dies out of loyalty to his friend Romeo, Paris dies for his loyalty to Juliet. Romeo and Juliet in particular are very loyal to each other, willingly give up their ties to their families for each other. I’d say people today still value loyalty, but not to this extent. We have more freedom to make decisions for our own benefit and choose who we stay loyal to.
