Would it be a good idea to curtail college drinking? My paper so far is :
Can you imagine a world where it’s a lot safer when you’re with college students? That’s a world without drinking. In colleges, it’s very lax on student drinking, resulting in assaults, car accidents, and other negative consequences. Therefore, I firmly believe that curtailing student drinking in colleges is a great solution. A more relaxed law on drinking in colleges shows an increase in automobile crashes and assaults. A study conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) found that between 1999 and 2005, the proportions of students aged 18 to 24 who drove after consuming alcohol increased to 29.24 percent from 26.1 percent. That was a result of students who thought it was safe to consume alcohol before driving. It resulted in more crashes and more deaths. The dangers don’t stop there, however. Problems not only happened behind the wheel, but also inside the schools. A nationwide survey in 2001 polled that almost 700,000 college students were assaulted or attacked by a drunk college student. More lax laws led to more students being put in mortal danger. Therefore, those laws need to be changed. Colleges allowing students to consume alcohol also affect the student's future. College students who drink start to have a negative effect on their school performance. The problems with their school performance means it could affect the rest of their life. A study reported that one of four students has problems with school because of their consumption of alcohol. It affects anything from grades, to friends and relationships. Also, drinking makes them more prone and susceptible to violent crime. Students that drink are more likely to commit crimes, resulting in them getting punishments such as jail time. All in all, students who drink have their life affected severely. On the other hand, if you inform students about the dangers of drinking, they’re less likely to become addicted to it. A survey in 2007 showed that when incoming college students were informed of the dangers of alcohol, 25% of them didn’t or weren’t addicted to alcohol, 15% less than previous years when they weren’t informed. Therefore, you shouldn’t restrict alcohol, you should just inform them, and they’ll make the right choice. But that leaves one crucial point that needs attention. In the same survey, the students that were college regulars had the same rates of alcohol consumption, staying around 40-45%. It didn’t affect the older students who were at the college, it only affected the incoming students from the high school.Just explaining the dangers of alcohol to them has an effect on them when they're college freshmen, but later it has no effect on them, because as soon as they enter college, they’ll immediately be exposed to alcohol and they’ll fall either into old habits or become addicted to this new drink. Therefore, you need to restrict them, not explain the dangers of it. In conclusion, alcohol is a known danger to colleges and college students as we know it. Letting the students drink is a poor decision on the college’s part. It affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally, leading them to make decisions they would never have made if they weren’t under the influence. Even though college lasts for 4 to 6 years, it has a lasting impact on the rest of a person's life.
