math help?

maths89898:

A pizza parlor in Portland sells a pizza with an 18-inch diameter. A pizza parlor in San Anita, Peru, sells a pizza with a 30.6-centimeter diameter. Part A: How many square inches of pizza is the pizza from Portland? Show every step of your work. (1 point) Part B: How many square centimeters of pizza is the pizza from San Anita, Peru? Show every step of your work. (1 point) Part C: If 1 in. = 2.54 cm, which pizza has the larger area? Show every step of your work. (1 point) Part D: Using the diameter of each pizza, determine the scale factor relationship between the pizzas. (1 point)

Razor:

So maths, what is it you're having trouble with exactly?

im having trouble with understanding the way they worded the math problem

Razor:

Yeah it is pretty confusing. We have to break it down. Do you know how to do the scale factor on your own or do you need help with that as well?

maths89898:

probably need help with the scale factor too but i understand well when im given a formula

Razor:

Give me a moment. Are you timed?

maths89898:

nope i got all day

Razor:

Hopefully we don't take all day because I have to close at work today :) So you know how to get the square inches of a circle? We're starting with Part A first. You multiply the radius by the radius. What's the radius of the pizza from portland?

maths89898:

It's 9 because you divide 18 by 2

maths89898:

And Peru's radius would be 15.3

maths89898:

15.3 x 9 = 137.7

Razor:

Well yes but no. We're supposed to be finding the square inches of one pizza not both for Part A. So you multiply 9 by 9 to get?

maths89898:

Oh 81

Razor:

So for part A your answer is 81 square inches.

maths89898:

great!!

Razor:

So for Part B it's a bit different. Finding the square inches of a circle is different from finding the square centimeters of one.

maths89898:

Wait, I think ik how to do this one

maths89898:

Im trying to think cuz ive done something similar with it

Razor:

I'll wait :)

maths89898:

yeah i cant think the wording is so difficult to understand ☠

Razor:

there is like one shortcut I'm thinking of. If you google, "How to find the square centimeters of a circle", the formula given is Area = pi * radius * radius. But you could also do this exactly like how you did with square inches and then convert to square centimeters by multiplying your figure by 6.4516. Since there are 6.4516 square centimeters in 1 square inch.

maths89898:

I think the formula sounds way easier, so is it pi x 15.3 x 15.3?

Razor:

if that's what's half of the diameter then yer

maths89898:

735.4

maths89898:

I rounded that to the nearest tenths btw

Razor:

does it say to round

maths89898:

uh i dont think so but i dont think my teacher would appreciate it if i typed 735.4154243

Razor:

LOL Fair point. Moving on! Can just say 734 I think since it's .4 you could round it even further down to make it whole. Anyways. Part C. Which of the two has a larger area if 1 in = 2.54 cm

maths89898:

LOL yeah I think I might go with portland since square inches are larger than square cm

Razor:

I suppose you could also convert the cm to inches to be sure.

maths89898:

sure!

maths89898:

oh dang ur right thats 113 square inches

maths89898:

💀

maths89898:

114* when It's rounded

Razor:

Just to be even MORE sure include the original numbers before you rounded and then include what you rounded to. Since it seems like a graded assignment, that way it's harder to just say you're wrong. Just in case yk.

maths89898:

yupp i will

maths89898:

so then

maths89898:

would i divide 114 by 2.54?

Razor:

Was 114 what you got when you converted it to square inches or? And for which pizza?

maths89898:

it was for san anita and yeah its what i got when i converted it to square in

Razor:

if they're both square inches there's no need to divide.

Razor:

or multiply

maths89898:

it was 735 square cm before i converted it

Razor:

just compare and see what's the bigger nuuuuumber

maths89898:

OH

Razor:

as square inches though not centimeters

maths89898:

yeah its def san anita

Razor:

Bet. Put that in.

maths89898:

im like trying to function with 4 hours of sleep so hard 💀

Razor:

Part D: Using the diameter of each pizza, determine the scale factor relationship between the pizzas. You should sleep more.

maths89898:

ill sleep when i finish all my assignments next week

Razor:

Felt that. You know how to do scale factor?

maths89898:

def not its mad confusing 💀💀

maths89898:

im def gonna need to write some notes next time

Razor:

One moment then. I admit I wasn't in class for these lessons.

maths89898:

💀
