lemme know if its good, its my critical paper F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel The Great Gatsby is ironic because Gatsby isn't so great. Gatsby seems like a good person at the beginning of the book, but we soon realize what Gatsby had done, and how he has done it, in order to become the person he is now. Regardless, some people might say that Gatsby is great because of how loving and caring he is. Although this may be true, Gatsby isn’t great. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the character Gatsby is not “great” because he is a liar, a criminal, and is obsessive. Gatsby is a liar. In the middle of the novel, Gatsby was telling Nick the truth about his life and how changed his name to Gatsby. He admitted: “It was James Gatz who had been loafing along the beach that afternoon in a torn green jersey and a pair of canvas pants” (Fitzgerald 98). This shows that Gatsby is a liar because Gatsby finally starts to tell Nick who he really is, as in changing his name and his whole identity, and what he had to do to become the person he is now. He's trying to make people believe someone he thinks he is when he's not. Another way Gatsby shows that he is a liar is when Gatsby showed up at Nick's house to invite him for a ride and to have lunch with him while talking to Nick he said “He’s from San Francisco, he inherited his money from wealthy parents, he traveled Europe collecting jewelry, painting, was a war hero, and went to Oxford'' (Fitzgerald 65-67) This quote relates to the subtopic because Gatsby hurried the phrase “Educated at Oxford'', if anything he says educated and not graduated. He also lied about where he actually came from, his parents finances, and how he told two different people, two completely different ways how he actually made his money. Just the beginning :D
