Mitosis is the process of dividing two somatic cells into two identical daughter cells through the replication of their chromosomes. Meiosis is a biological process where sperm and egg cells produce a single diploid cell that is divided twice to produce four identical daughter haploid cells containing half the original amount of genetic information. Similar to mitosis, meiosis will most likely alter/affect genetic variation, synthesize DNA, and at the end of both of these processes a cell will be divided. The importance of both meiosis and mitosis is that they are responsible for the production of new cells in living organisms. Meiosis is responsible for the production of gametes, which are used in sexual reproduction, while mitosis is responsible for producing new cells for growth and replacement of old cells.
