Do you believe victimless crimes should be enforced? Why/why not?

nettym:

INFO: VICTIMLESS CRIMES INCLUDE DRUG ABUSE, PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS, PROSTITUTION, VAGRANCY, AND CERTAIN VOLUNTARY SEXUAL BEHAVIOR. Victimless crimes normally don’t harm the individual but harm society at large.

euphoriiic:

Victimless crimes are those that involve consensual acts between adults.. such as drug use, nd others. Some people argue that these activities should not be considered crimes because they do not harm anyone elseee while others believe that they should still be enforced because they are illegal and can have negative consequences for society as a whole. Ultimately, the decision on whether to enforce victimless crimes is up to lawmakers and society as a whole to decide. Answering this question would have to be your own opinion on if they should be enforced or not.

I would argue that these aren't necessarily victimless crimes. Drug abuse: while the victim is arguably only the drug abuser (and thus, who does this 'really harm?'), yet the severe use of these drugs can have many harmful potential impacts. They can be a danger to any around them. They are also funding drug dealers and illicit activities, thereby implicitly supporting harmful actors in the community. In general for many of these 'victimless crimes,' its a matter of not promoting these behaviors because it's not good that these people are harming themselves in this way, and potential others.

i would add that people doing drugs or prostituting can effect the family of these people so are they really victimless?

Shadow:

Public drunkenness: similarly something that we do not want to promote, and these people could harm others since they are mentally inhibited. Prostitution is a bit tricky. Should people be allowed to sell sex as a commodity? I think this is a pretty tricky argument as for some people, it's one of the ways they provide income in order to support their family. Yet the health concerns, drugs, and violence involved (pimps and territory issues) can easily lead to potential harms to the prostitutes and other actors. I think prostitution is largely illegal though as a statement of values. America as a whole doesn't think we should let (largely) women sell their bodies. It promotes a public display of overt sexuality, and a certain acceptability of sexual behavior in public places (think Johns and prostitutes in parking lots at Walmart, etc). I don't think it's victimless if little Timmy sees a prostitute on the way to school, or sees a man treating a woman as a sex object.

Shadow:

There are some good counterarguments though, that legalizing prostitution makes it safer for women and they can operate on private ranches and keep it out of the public eye. It still places a certain statement of values, that you can readily trade money for sex, and promotes viewing largely women as sex objects, which can be dangerous.

You shouldn't be posting ChatGPT though. If the poster wanted a chat GPT answer, they could go ask it themselves. They are here for peoples' opinions.

Victimless crime is sort of a dishonest framing made by vice merchants in order to make people feel guilty for wanting a healthier society. Prostitution, drug dealing, gambling, etc. are all vice profiteering. They prey upon people's weaknesses. They lead people into self destructive habits to get their money. If you allow them to go unchecked you just end up with each generation being more self destructive. In all of these situations, the self destructive behavior harms not just the person doing it, but their loved ones. They also drain resources various social programs meant to help people in bad situation through no fault of their own.
