in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says, "i did not come to bring peace, but a sword" (Matthew 10:34) so what does this statement mean in the broader context of Jesus' teachings about peace and love? if your a true christian please feel free to answer this because i want your honest opinion about this type of question. :)

vanessad123:

Im not really understanding the question.

LoneWolfLegend04:

it's ok i don't understand it either but we can all talk about it and learn it together and try to answer it together :)

Midnight97:

Wow this is deep and also very true and I agree with vanessad

Angie00:

He wanted to help his followers understand that the season of political peace will not come soon. that what he really means

LoneWolfLegend04:

so this what i think what this verse means to me so if you go to Matthew 10:34-39. you can see in that passage Jesus is using strong and provocative language to emphasize the radical nature of the discipleship. and when i see sword in there i think Jesus speaks of is metaphorical and represents the division that i have may occur within families and communities as well. so as a result of people's responses to the messages of the Gospel.

LoneWolfLegend04:

so in a broader message of Jesus is not the one promoting violence or conflict. but instead, it underscores the idea that following him could lead to tension and division, even within close relationships. then if you go to verse 38 the call to take up one's cross indicates the willingness to endure hardship and opposition for the sake of the Gospel.

LoneWolfLegend04:

so all of Jesus teachings includes his emphasis on love, compassion, and peacemaking, this statement is just a reminder that yeah following Christ may require alot of sacrifice and may lead to conflicts, especially when individuals prioritize their loyalty to Jesus above all else. it is a challenging call to discipleship that emphasizes the transformative and sometimes divisive impact of the Gospel message on individuals and societies. so this how i will answer this question and that is my opinion on what i think so yeah :)

I will try to not make my responses about my personal beliefs or opinions (I am an atheist, but I will never force my beliefs on someone else.) The statement made by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, "I did not come to bring peace, but a sword" (Matthew 10:34), has been interpreted in various ways by scholars and theologians. Some argue that Jesus was not advocating for violence or conflict, but rather emphasizing the divisive nature of his teachings. In other words, following Jesus' teachings may lead to division and conflict within families and communities, rather than bringing peace and harmony. It is important to note that this statement should not be taken out of context, but rather interpreted within the broader context of Jesus' teachings about peace and love. Jesus' message is one of love, compassion, and forgiveness, and he consistently taught his followers to love their neighbors and enemies alike. In fact, he famously said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9). Overall, while Jesus' statement may seem contradictory to his teachings about peace and love, it is important to understand the broader context in which it was made.
