Midnight97:

Why was the tax on whiskey levied? To pay for the Revolutionary War To pay for the War of 1812 To pay for a new navy To pay off the Hessian mercanaries

Phantomdex:

I believe it was to help pay off the debt that amounted from the Revolutionary War.

The tax on whiskey was imposed with the sole purpose of generating revenue to fund the expenses of the Revolutionary War. This tax was levied on all distilled spirits produced in the United States, including whiskey. It was one of the first federal taxes imposed on a domestic product, and it sparked significant resistance among American farmers and distillers, leading to the infamous Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. Despite the uproar, the tax remained in effect until it was repealed in 1802.
