adrianluvvsyouu2:

In the year 1830, the Nullification Crisis had not yet occurred. However, sentiment was building following the 1828 tariffs, also known as the "Tariff of Abominations". Many southern states, especially South Carolina were unhappy with the situation, whose leaders were discussing nullification, including Jackson's VP John C. Calhoun, and threatened to nullify the federal law. Jackson was not pleased, and stated "The union shall be preserved" for his toast at a dinner (Forgot the name). The short answer is, South Carolina threatened to nullify a federal law, which would go against the constitution's supremacy clause in Article IV which states that federal laws take precedent over state laws. As well as Article I Section 8 which states congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce. Jackson sought to uphold the constitution, and not allow South Carolina to nullify the federal tariffs.
