I just started playing electric guitar about a month ago but I'm not sure where to start to learn. I have ADHD and I get overwhelmed very quickly. Anyone have useful advice or resources? If you want to DM me and help, that is appreciated as well. Thanks!

Hey, I also struggle with ADHD! While I don't play instruments, I do have some tips to help you out. (: I've noticed one of the hardest things for me as a person with ADHD is starting things, or sometimes not starting things. It might help to keep your guitar out on a stand, otherwise your brain will forget it's even there. If your guitar is in its case, it doesn’t exist. If you struggle with focusing for large portions of time, don't do long practice sessions. Even if it's just 5 minutes, it will make a difference. (: For tutorials/practice and learning in general you can use https://www.justinguitar.com It's free, structured, and tells you exactly what to practice and for how long.

Thank you for not giving me an answer that involved AI. Justin Guitar seems really cool so I'll have to check it out (as I've been recommended to his content by a few other friends as well). I'll have my guitar out near my closet for now on instead of being put up Thanks for the advice!

JusJeyk:

Yeah of course! I did use AI to touch up on the reply and to find web resources like Justin Guitar. I tend to avoid using AI, but I like to use it to find resources more efficiently and to tidy up my thoughts, since they can get messy and hard to read very easily.

JusJeyk:

I had to fact check the website though because AI can be stupid sometimes, but you should give Justin Guitar a look because it does look pretty solid and a good starting point.

I have ADHD too, and honestly, I feel you! I have a hard time starting topics in general but once I get on it, I'm a nerd at it. A few things that helped for me was 1) To force it : Usually with ADHD, the bar that keeps you from starting something is high. If you just force yourself to do it without relying on enjoyment / 'gut feeling', you'll usually end up getting at it. However, don't overdo this because this will make you feel forced to do something as if it's a chore. 2) As JusJeyk mentioned, have it displayed! To me, it doesn't exist if my eyes don't see it. But make sure to move it around once in a while so it doesn't become the background for you. 3) Have a support system. Do your friends have this same hobby? Regardless of the experience levels in between, try to engage with them more so you can keep uplifting each other to continue the hobby. If not, try TikTok, Reddit, or Discord! Finding existing or new friends with the same hobby can feel exciting. 4) Don't stress out about the *right* way to learn this hobby. It's a hobby, not a lifetime job. Take it easy, don't overwhelm yourself, and you can always start back again if it doesn't work well for you. If it gets too much, it's okay to take a break too! 5) Visit local music centers! It can be as simple as Guitar Center, or any small business shops that may dabble in music. This ties to 3, but you can also find ways that experienced players learned about their hobby! Good luck, and I hope you get started at it! :))
