short story! (will post in a comment)

cullenn:

It was my annual blood donation, but I was late in August, so my appointment was moved to October. I smiled as I walked into the office. “Good morning! I have a blood donation appointment for Lily Wildes.” “Yes, ma’am! Right through that door.” The desk lady smiled and pointed. I walked in and sat on the exam table. When a new doctor walked in, I was slightly surprised, but since I was a few months late, I just thought maybe this was normal, maybe Doctor Reynolds was off. “Hello! Just a pint of blood.” I spoke to the new doctor. “Yes, ma’am. We upgraded our blood bags, so they look huge, but it’s still just a pint, don’t worry.” I just nodded, thinking the bag would be wider. When she hung the bag on the hook, it was three times as big. “M-ma’am, that’s three pints.” “No, it’s just one.” She smiled at me, a large smile, but no teeth. She never looked at me when she spoke. I leaned back, slightly nervous. I convinced myself she would only take one pint; maybe they were out of one-pint bags. Maybe she isn’t filling it up all the way. I closed my eyes as she put the needle in and taped it down. After a few minutes, I started feeling more lightheaded than normal. I looked at the bag and squealed when I saw it was almost full. “Doctor! My blood!” She just smiled at me, again with no teeth. “Miss, I promise you don’t need to worry.. I do this every year.” She had a hint of sarcasm as she said, “You won’t die.” “No, it’s almost full!” “Indeed, it is, ma’am.” I was going to tear the needle out, but then everything went dark. * * * I awoke to a sharp pain in my wrist. I saw two tooth marks, like a snake or a huge spider. I was still out of it, so it didn’t mean much to me at the time. I looked around and saw the nurse. “Miss?” I fumbled around slightly, trying to sit up. She smiled; this time her teeth showed. I screamed. She was coming closer. She picked up my hand. I was frozen. I couldn’t move. “Darling. Do not be afraid! I will not hurt you.” She bit me. Everything went black. When I awoke, the vampire was staring over me. I pinched myself lightly; there was no pain. I pinched harder, no pain. I must be dreaming then. I’m dreaming, I’m dreaming, I’m dreaming, I’m dreaming. I just kept repeating those words, until slowly, slowly, the pain was coming back. It didn’t hurt, though. I was happy. Nothing hurt anymore. The pain was so much, yet nothing at all. It made no sense, yet I understood everything. I smiled. I leaned against the wall. I couldn’t see the vampire. Everything is okay. Am I dying? Or was I just in a dream? Everything is okay. I’m better. Nothing hurts. I closed my eyes and smiled wider. It’s all over. Everything went dark; the only difference? I didn’t wake up this time.
