if you want to learn at a real basic level go to the new boston for starters and basic syntax. Tizag and w3schools are also great. google php free ebooks for free resources.

I second "thenewboston" on youtube, he is an excellent teacher for getting the basics learned. Technically php is a server-side scripting language though. If you wanted to learn about building websites that seems like an excellent choice. Otherwise I'd lean toward Perl,Python,C,C++ or Java.
