the heating automatically switches on when the temp outside is -4, one winters day the temp outside was 5oc, how much did it drop for heating to go on automatically..

It keeps sayin am getting it wrong but i dont think i am is obvious
\[-4^oC\] <<-- is when the thermostat turns on the heat? If so, and if the current temperature is \[5^oC\], then the temperature has to fall 9 degrees Celsius before the heat comes on.
