The degree is the exponent.
Sometimes with multiple exponents, it is the highest one. For instance 3x^2 + 3x^1, the degree is 2.
Your degree for 5x*y^6 is 6, because x^1 is has a lower exponent than y^6

This is the form of a "Degree of a monomial" See this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degree_(mathematics) It's nice that i'm patching up this error.. i'm an ap calculus student and I didn't know that haha. So yes, you add the exponents - the answer is 7 by adding x^(1) and y^(6). 1+6=7
