OpenStudy (yrivers36):

Identify the degree and coefficient of 5xy^6. I know the coefficient is 5 but not sure of degree.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The degree is the exponent. Sometimes with multiple exponents, it is the highest one. For instance 3x^2 + 3x^1, the degree is 2. Your degree for 5x*y^6 is 6, because x^1 is has a lower exponent than y^6

OpenStudy (yrivers36):

the answer says 7. Do you think they are adding the 6 to x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well. I'm fairly certain that that is not correct. One second.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I found the answer

OpenStudy (yrivers36):

ok thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is the form of a "Degree of a monomial" See this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degree_(mathematics) It's nice that i'm patching up this error.. i'm an ap calculus student and I didn't know that haha. So yes, you add the exponents - the answer is 7 by adding x^(1) and y^(6). 1+6=7

OpenStudy (yrivers36):

thank you so much. I wasnt sure how they got the 7
