(square root of 2)^(x+4)=4^x

I know I just posted, but it started hailing so had to step away, but anyway...

So I get that I need to square both sides, but do you square the power also? If so, and rewriting the problem, I get=
[2^(x+4)]^2=[4^x]^2.

Do you square the exponents too? Or do you just multiply them by 2?
