OK.. When doing these types of problems I always look for "who" they are talking about. This problem says "A cheetah's sprinting speed" IS .... .. ...
It never says "A zebra's running speed" IS.......
The one it doesn't say "IS" gets the x.

So the zebra = x

Then you go back to the first sentence and read it word for word putting in math symbols for words. The "catch" is that if you read the words "than", "subtracted from" or "added to" you have to "work backwards"

I will explain that now.

A cheetah's sprinting speed is 61 miles per hour LESS THAN THREE TIMES a zebra's.

You will notice the word "than" so you write down what comes after that first "three times a zebra's" which means 3x because the zebra is x.

Then you go back to the word "THAN" and read what is right before that "LESS" so now you have "3x -"

Then you ask yourself how many less and you answer "61" so you write
3x - 61 this IS what the cheetah's speed is

But the next sentence says that a Cheetah's speed is 68 so you put

3x - 61 = 68

Then to solve this "+61" to both sides

3x = 129

Divide both sides by 3

x = 43

So the zebra's speed is 43mph
