So I just finished problem set 4...but I'm wondering, how can I apply this to creating actually useful programs when I'm done?

It's a learning process. Like tedious mathematical derivations, it doesn't seem to be creating anything worthwhile until you get up to a certain point. Once you know all the basics, you can move to other things which may involve graphic users interfaces or "useful" applications. In problem set 4, for instance, you are creating a simple function that is used throughout thousands of applications.

If you want to have a feeling of self-accomplishment and you want to see how far you are getting, you may want to try this.

As for specific examples, remember that every single programmer who is now designing complex programs was, at one point, in your foot steps.

well of course, i realize that i am at a very elementary level, i was just curious about the process of programming and how it could be applied at an advanced level, which i hope to reach.

by specific examples, i mean i want to see examples of advanced programs that are applied. for example, do you know any websites or businesses that use python, and could you show me the program?

and i'm not saying i don't believe python can do those things, i know it can. i'm just curious to see how.

Python is used in Google. Consider that Google is one of the powerhouses in term of...everything.
