example of find a basis of a subspace of a 2 x 2 matrix

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which subspace? The column, row, null, eigen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the set of all 2 x 2 diagonal matrices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think that all diagonal matrices are produced by linear combination of these matrices: 1) [1 0; 0 0] , 2) [0 1; 0 0] , 3) [0 0; 1 0] , 4) [0 0; 0 1] where the notation is [first row; second row]...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry... my mistake with the above you can produce all 2x2 matrices.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the diagonal ones you only need: 1) [1 0; 0 0] and 4) [0 0; 0 1] ... is that clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am viewing..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you ... what would the dimension be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the dimension of the space of all 2x2 matrices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the answer to my question is 4 and the answer to yours is 2... check out this http://www.solitaryroad.com/c210.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the answer is 2 also
