i have to solve for x
8/(x^2-1) + 4x/(x-1) + 8/(x+1) = 0
OpenStudy (dumbcow):
combine fractions by finding common denominator
can you factor x^2 -1 ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
(x+1)(x-1)
OpenStudy (dumbcow):
good
and the other 2 denominators are factors of that right
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yeah but i get lsot after that

OpenStudy (dumbcow):
ok so our denominator will be (x+1)(x-1) for the 1st fraction nothing changed, 2nd fraction we added (x+1) so add (x+1) to numerator, 3rd fraction we added (x-1) so add (x-1) to numerator
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so 8 +4x(x+1)+8(x-1)=0
OpenStudy (dumbcow):
yes but that is all over (x-1)(x+1)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ohhh
i forgot that step
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8+4x+8=0

4x=16 so therefore x=4??
OpenStudy (dumbcow):
now here is shortcut, because it equals 0 the denominator doesnt matter
0/x = 0
so set numerator equal to 0 and solve for x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
did u get 4?
OpenStudy (dumbcow):
you cant cancel the (x+1) and (x-1) because there is addition on numerator
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i have 4x^2 +12x=0

and now im lost again
OpenStudy (dumbcow):
good so far
try factoring out an x
OpenStudy (dumbcow):
i mean take an x away from each term
then you will have a product =0
solve for each part setting it equal to 0
you will have 2 answers
