The check points in cell cycle do not occur "in" the phase, the come inbetween the phases, it is to make sure everything is alright before cell is allowed to enter the next phase of replication.

There is in fact a check point before cell is allowed to enter the S phase itself.

DNA replication or more specifically DNA polymerase 3 has its own mechanism of proof reading, this enzyme itself rechecks whether the replication has occurred as it was supposed to and this takes place simultaneously while the process of replication goes on. The corrections are made simultaneously. This is why after S phase no separate check point is needed, however cell enters its second resting phase to allow the process mentioned above to finish accordingly.

after this phase however there is a check point as cell prepares to jump into actual phase of division, the M phase. On this check point all the final checks are made whether everything upto that point has gone according to the plan or not.
