what is d diference between a computer network and a distributed system

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in a computer network every client is equal to each other and runs their own software and programs. In a distributed network a larger amount of computer is working as a grid to run a program or solve one combine task together.

According to the definition, a computer network is a distributed system. A distributed system is a collection of elements connected to each other, sending messages to each other. The biggest example we have is the Internet itself. A Local Area Network is an example too. Ben gave an example of something we can find in distributed systems, Computer Clusters.

The difference is...in distributed systems it it implied that different computers on a network REQUIRE each other to function. A "computer network" does not imply that the machines REQUIRE the presence of others
