Ubuntu is best for beginner you can install along with windows. Search in the net for your location Linux user group. They will conduct Linux user group meet not only in linux but cover open source concept.

Ubuntu let's U install inside windows........ WUBI...... this won't affect anything on windows.......this will run just as a program. Once u are familiar u can switch to full installation........ No need to worry help is always available........

Ubuntu is good but Linux Mint is better. You won't have to worry about licensing hassles and hardware drivers.

Linux mint is the best for begginers it comes preinstalled with almost all software like "vlc" , compiz confiz, gimp, office etc...... i would suggest MINT

I strongly recommend to use Ubuntu or fedora

You can go ahead with Ubuntu . Why use Ubuntu : 1.Huge support. 2.stable release . 3.Lot of distro use ubuntu as their base. 4.18 months Long term support. Since you want to use it for programming I recommend. Vim with nerdtree and autocompletion . . .
