what is DNA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi, DNA stands for deoxyribosenucleic acid. It is composed of four different nucleotides in long sequences. It is a very reliable way for cells to store information.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Deoxy Ribo Nucleic Acid is a type of Nucleic acid which carries the genetic sequence. It contains 4 bases-2 purines, 2 pyrimidines, and a sugar Deoxy-Ribose.It is incorporated inside the nucleus of the cell in eucaryotic organisms. Some quantity is found in mitochondria also. The sequence of base pair arrangement of DNA determines the type and quality of the protein synthesis and cell division and function. The bases are purines -(Adenine and Guanine), pyramidines(Cytosine and thiamine) in DNA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNA

DNA consists of a two stranded sequence (double helix) of nucleotides attached in the 5' to 3' direction. Each nitrogenous base in a nucleotide bonds together (Adenine with Thymine / Guanine with Cytosine) due to hydrogen bonds. The DNA backbone is composed of the pentose sugar (deoxyribose) bonding to the next nucleotide's phosphate group on it's 3rd carbon (look at a diagram of a nucleotide then look at a diagram of several nucleotides in a DNA sequence to really see what I'm talking about). Good luck :)
