Help me summarize the endocrine system!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK! The endocrine system is a body system of glands which release hormones into the body. The glands achieve this by releasing the hormones directly into the blood stream, where they travel to various parts of the body to perform their functions. However, the endocrine system is not as quick as the nervous system; it can take hours or weeks for the hormones to produce the desired effect in the body. The endocrine system is generally considered to be composed of the thalamus, hypothalamus, thyroid, pineal, pituitary, adrenal glands, pancreas, and gonads. However, other organs, such as the heart, liver, parathyroid gland, skin, kidney, and stomach produce hormones that are secreted directly into the blood stream, so they are considered part of the endocrine system. The endocrine system regulates everything from heart rate to growth to increasing oxygen flow to muscles and to the brain, to stimulating the breakdown of adipose tissue.
