evaluate I 9 - 9 I...does absolute symbols make the second nine positive?

myininaya (myininaya):

|0|=0

OpenStudy (tad1):

no. The absolute value makes the result positive. sp the answer is 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that all the absolute values signs do is switch the sign if the result is negative. \[|a| = a \text{ if } a \ge 0\]\[|a| = -a \text{ if }a < 0\] So in this case a = 9-9. 9-9 is 0 which is greater than or equal to 0, so the absolute value of 9-9 = |0| = 0 since \(0 \ge 0\)

myininaya (myininaya):

9+|-9|=9+9=18 |-9+9|=|0|=0 |-9|+|-9|=9+9=18 |-9|-9=9-9=0 |-9|-|-9|=9-9=0 |x| represents the distance from 0 |x| can be positive or neutral depending on x's value

myininaya (myininaya):

|9|=9 since 9 is 9 units from zero |-9|=9 since -9 is 9 units from zero |0|=0 since 0 is 0 units from zero
