Hello, I'm trying to teach myself computer science. I bought the for dummies programming book so far and would be cool to meet some people who share/could help with the subject. Any advice is welcome :)
Well...select what you wanna be, or just study generally everything. As a recommendation, focus in python, javascript or C++, and if it is too hard start with HTML. Remember, be original, do things by yourself and do experiments. Improve things. ASK OTHERS. But your question is too big, so i recommend you to focus in a special career or computer science study. http://www.w3schools.com/
Would you like to write websites or desktop software?
well ShroukiePoo you should learn QBASIC for the beginning and solve algorihm questions, then you can learn VB.NET when you became a master in QBASIC then learn C, its the base, then choose what you want to be, desktop app developer, website coder or game programmer, or robotics programmer :)
Everyone has their different opinions on what programming languages to study - Let me do you a favour and tell you, do not listen to them. Too often have I seen students come into University to study computer science and then drop out because they chose Java development when they would have been better at C#. Try and find a career that you're aiming towards, and learn only those languages you feel comfortable with after trying your hand at them, as languages are different for different people. Programming is something you have a lot of time to learn, so start with what is easy for you. I do, however, recommend that you find a book or resource that explains Processing and Logic Concepts (mainly logic gates, truth tables, system and program flowcharts) and then move on to learning pseudocode (program design) and finally gather some information on Software Engineering (Unified Modeling Language, etc) it'd be very helpful to learn SQL too. Hope that helped :)
and i learned everthing on myself abou tprogramming too ^^ red over 1.200 or 2.000 articles and red over 23 thecnical book :D about these, 3 of them was about DOSi remember lol...
Especially for someone just starting out, I'd recommend Stanford's CS106A Programming Methodology, Open Courseware course. http://see.stanford.edu
for beginners, head first books r a grt source of joy n learning
