How can you determine if two lines are perpendicular?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The line is perpendicular is the slope of the first line times the slope of the second line = -1

OpenStudy (tad1):

the slopes are negative reciprocals if m = 1/3, then the perpendicular slope = -3 (1/3)*3 = -1 hence the name negative reciprocal

First, you have to determine the slope of the first line, and then you determine the slope of the second line. Next, you multiply the slope of the first line by the slope of the second line. If your answer is equal to -1, then the two lines are perpendicular.
