for some reason my homework doesn't enjoy simplified fractions. Yet simplified fractions is all my calculator gives me. How can I "unsimplify" -6 1/5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6 and 1/5.....is that what you're trying to unsimplify?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If that's what you're trying to unsimplify, it's -31/5. But that's an improper fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've never heard of "unsimplification". The opposite of simplification is expansion.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the help. I was not sure of the term for what I was asking.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that really all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, we are working on slope intercept, and for some reason the computer refuses to take simplified fractions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, it refuses to accept improper fractions or mixed numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

normally, a computer will only understand improper fractions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It will not recognize a mixed number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you have to convert.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep so it seems. thanks for the help, I had the right expansion just mixed something else up in the equation in the first place.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

5' 1/3 converts to: [5(3)+1] over 3 = 16/3 and such

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I hope you're still here kdsim

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-6' 1/5 is all negative so your right; -31/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow

OpenStudy (anonymous):

typo

OpenStudy (amistre64):

think of it as -(6' 1/5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reading thanks. amistre the equation you provided really helps for future problems

OpenStudy (amistre64):

glad to help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, that's my bad, I failed to explain the method...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright all im back to my homework, less this takes me another hour!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

amistre64, why is it so slow tonight?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

maybe we banned everyone ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really?
