what is displacement? for speed and velocity stuff

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The difference from where you started to where you are right now, NOT total distance traveled.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Vector version of distance (includes how far travelled and in what direction).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how do you find it??? do you take the final distance form the initial distance??

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

displacement is equal to the distance from where you were to where you are now.. what the people above me mean is that: suppose you walk around in a circle and stop where you started.. that means your displacement is 0, since you didn't end up anywhere other than where u started..

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

but the distance is the circumference of that circle.. since u traveled some distance..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so if the end position was e.g. 15 and where i started was 5 thewn would the displacement be 10??? so the difference, right??

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

yes

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

but the distance would be like did you travel in a straight line say: 5__________10 or 5_______|-|_10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the second one??? :s whats the i-i_10?

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

go on here.. let me draw and explain: http://www.twiddla.com/564137

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

see what I meant..
