Meiosis is very similar to mitosis but has an extra division to produce haploid gametes (sex cells that have half the amount of chromosomes as normal cells). Before the divisions there is an independent assortment of maternal and paternal chromosomes where the chromosomes will cross over eachother and swap sections to produce chromosomes which are a mixture of the two chromosomes they come from. In the first division the two chromosomes are seperated into two daughter cells, and the further division separates the chromosomes into single chromosomes. This diagram might make it a bit more clear: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HCSArpEoodM/TWa_j86__NI/AAAAAAAAACM/8LBCbZWjad0/s1600/meiosis.jpg

There's mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is about growth: cell division. Meiosis is about sex: making new sperm and eggs. Meiosis takes a cell that has two sets of chromosomes (diploid) and produces four sex cells that each have one set of chromosomes, When sperm meets egg, you get back to a diploid critter.
