Welp, what do you want to know? Spain, Portugal, France, and England all wanted part of this materials rich area [Tobacco, cotton, wood, etc] so they effectively established tons of colonies on the continent.

Well it first starts with Spain and there search for three things. Gold, being the first to fund Spanish wealth at home to support its oversized elite social class. Second, was for glory to make ones name known (also paying glory to the monarch him/herself). Third and finally for God. To make a new Catholic bastion in the west with the popes approval. The other major powers just followed there lead. The Dutch with New Amsterdam, the french with New Orleans and the English with Jamestown to note a few.

It was basically a competition between the Spanish, French and British. Spain set up colonies in areas around South and Central America plus Florida. France set up colonies in Central North America, which today would be the central United States. And England set up colonies on the Eastern shore of North America. The Spanish were definitely treated the native americans the worst, enslaving them and forcing them into hard labor. The British just didn't want them, kicking them out with a few beads and small pox infested blankets. And the French were the nicest to the Natives, fairly trading with them and in a lot of cases, marrying into the tribes. The greatest competition was between the French and British during the 100 years war, or the French and Indian War. Both sides allied themselves with varying tribes and fought for each others land. The British won and established the proclamation of 1763, which is a bit past the age of discovery but still relevant. It stated no colonization past the Appalachian mountains.
