why should we take blood from vein rather than artery??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

less pressure in the veins so the blood wont squirt everywhere. also theyre closer to the surface of the skin so its easier. thinner walls too

thanks!

OpenStudy (llort):

arteries have high pressure. Blood will go everywhere

I have took blood from both arteries and veins. Veins are superficial, easily approachable and low pressure system, while arteries are deep, difficult to puncture into and high pressure systems. Puncturing artery may cause big haematoma, if sufficient pressure is not applied after removing the needle for sufficient time. It depends on what test you are going to perform too. PT-INR, Serum Ammonia, ABG etc require arterial blood. While ESR, Blood counts, s. Glucose, Bilirubin etc are performed usually in venous blood.
