if there are carnivorous plants then there should be herbivorous plants too, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True in a sense, most plants gather nutrients from decayed organic plant matter in the soil.

I think a 'herbivorous plant' would have to be one which grows by using up another plant. One example of this would be honeysuckle which parasitises other plants and steals nutrients from their stems. I think this could technically count as herbivorous as well as the ones gathering nutrient from the soil.

Most plants have been made carnivorous and being given digestive enzymes through years of Evolution. This, essentially, is a defense mechanism. It's not as if plants go out hunting for food. They were frequently being attacked by insects or arthropods and developed this defense. However, there is no Ecological need for Herbivorous plants. There may be some that can be considered Herbivorous, like what was said above me, but they are not necessarily...necessary. Something doesn't always logically require a counterpart.

if you mean herbivorous or carnivorous in the sense that it breaks down a plant or animal to gain nutrients to sustain itself, there are probably a few plants that serve that purpose, but that niche is normally filled by fungi or bacteria such as certain molds or mushrooms, or bacillus, which are technically in a different domain that plants (fungi or bacteria vs. plantae) so I am sure there are, but not as common as other things that digest plants.

orchids must be herbivorous, they are a flower and are sustained by the trees which play host to them
