Is it okay to use informal language (slang) in writing haikus? for example.. Dough as in money? No more dough, no bread None to feed the hungry mind Dreams are now shattered

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it's ok. Poetry is constantly changing and adapting to the new ways and terms.

OpenStudy (rainbow):

Your haiku expresses a clear theme/image from your word choices to native English speakers who would understand the meaning of the slang term "dough." Other readers may not get the slang term but see the literal meaning of bread dough.

Using slag in this sense would be okay as you're already outside of the traditional haiku form which almost exclusively references some element of nature. However, if you were attempting to make a truly traditional representation of a haiku, you should probably avoid using the vernacular.

it's okay but its not really that clear

You will be a better writer for it, the reason haikus reference nature a lot is purely cultural. Using slang will not only be a reflection of culture, but it also puts in display the poorness and necessity reflected in the haiku.
