Who's independence? American?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you're talking about American independence, it happened for many reasons, but the most notable, is the colonists being upset over the lack of representation in parliament. The colonists showed a penchant for self government from the beginning, starting with the Mayflower Compact.

freedom of making your own laws?

OpenStudy (oscar):

To create a Democracy country where a King (Tyrant) would not ever lead. To become a country, not a colony of the King. To set laws of equality. "A more perfect Union." -Declaration of Independence To escape harsh taxes. (No Taxation without Representation) The U.S. was not represented by anyone.

The answer is complex, but there are two main points. For the common person at the time, idependence was largely insignificant. For merchants and land owners it was an opportunity to make more money by not having to pay the crown. The colonies actually never really did end up paying most of the taxes that they were revolting against. They did however pass on the "cost" to the people of the colonies. Philisophically, the Founding Fathers were mostly students of The Enlightenment, and therefore did not adhere to the concept of the Divine Right of Kings. This is I thin kthe most important part about the American Revolution historically: It was one of the first uprisings in the Western World that challeneged and successfully freed iteself from monarchy--which was hugely progressive for the time. France followed suit not long after, and the legacy of that is that the only surviving European monarchs are merely figure heads kept around by a conservative ode to tradition. It marked the beginning of a new age of social and political organization.
