how does friction work at a microscopic or atomic level

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At the nanoscale level friction is caused by Van der Waal force interaction whereby atomic dipoles are attracted/repelled to each other. Friction may also be caused by static charges or an electro/magnetic field (if present) depending on the material.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at atomic level it is not exactly the friction that opposes the motion but the electrostatic force that opposes the motion.
