who is good with completing squares

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so i have this equation x^2+4x=7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Trick to completing a square is taking half of the middle term(one with the x) and squaring it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 16 or divide by 2 then square?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So our middle term is 4; half is 2; square that and we get 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes 4 then from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you add a number of one side of the equation, You MUST also add the same number to other side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2+4x+4=7+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2+4x+4=11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that would be my answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now we can write x^2+4x+4 as (x+2)^2 So our equation would be (x+2)^2=11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so if its x^2-4x=1 it would be x^2-4x-4=1-4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, take -4,and half it-- you should get -2 --> Square that, what would you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhhhhhhhhh..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2^2 =4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes positive 4, not negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so new equation x^2-4x+4=1+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can factor x^2-4x+4 into (x-2)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sooo what about the 5 (1+4)... im a little slow on math.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that's on other side of equation (x-2)^2=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the question asks what number mus i add to complete the square it would be positive 4 correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're welcome
