find the difference. (2p^4 -3p^3 ) -( -3p^4 - p^3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First distribute the negative into each term within the second set of parenthesis to get: \[3p^4+p^3. \] Now you have: \[2p^4 -3p^3 +2p^4 +p^3 \] Then to get your answer all you have to do is combine like terms, do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

Here is a hint, in order for terms to be "like terms" they must have the exponent. can you identify which terms there have the same exponent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*must have the same exponent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummmm 2 and 3 im not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know what an exponent is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you please help me

Jay I assume you know how to add and subtract, if you understood exponents this would be very simple, just like adding and subtracting, please watch these videos to help you: http://www.khanacademy.org/video/level-1-exponents?playlist=Pre-algebra
