mr jones has one hot air balloon with a samll basket. 6 children want to go. he has them right down their names on a small piece of paper and he picks one at ramdom. 1.what is the probability he will select a boy? 2.What is the probability he will select a girl?
.5 probability of either assuming there are three girls and three boys.
So if there were two boys it would be 2/6 or 1/3/ Because one out of every three of the children are boys.
i dont get it :]
You have to know how many of the 6 kids are boys and how many are girls. For example, if all 6 were girls, then he'd be guaranteed to choose a girl!
Not enough information about the individual number of boys and girls. No solution.
If you don't know the numbers of boys and girls, you would have to generalize. P(b) = b / (b + g) Table of values for all possibilities: Boys Girls P(b) 0 6 0 1 5 1/6 2 4 2/6 or 1/3 3 3 3/6 or 1/2 4 2 4/6 or 2/3 5 1 5/6 6 0 6/6 or 1
Well, I guess if you know there are 6 children, you could just say, P(b) = b/6 :-)
