How long can we continue to raise the debt ceiling? What is the limit?
The debt ceiling can be raised as high as Congress wishes it to be. It just means we will be even deeper in the water if other countries ever decide to recall all of the debt we owe them. That is unlikely to happen considering how much the global economy depends on the United States. The problem is that we as a nation fiscally depend on all of the other countries just as much as they depend on us.
Hi Bucky, There is no direct answer to your question, but I will explain certain aspects of sovereign debt so that you can get an idea. A country can borrow as long as the lenders are ready to lend.Typically a country's ability to payback is measured as a ratio of debt to GDP of the nation.Though high debt to GDP ratios are not likened it is no measure of the health of a nation's economy. The key thing to look upon is how is the nation using the borrowed money, is it using the money for consumption(welfare schemes, real estate) ? or is it using for investment(infrastructure, education etc) ? if its used for investment then the country will earn the money in future to pay its debt. Borrowing money for consumption is not sustainable. I assume you are asking about US debt ceiling, technically there is no limit for that but politically since Republicans are against raising the limit,it depends upon the political consensus.
