a crop duster reading a map learns that on the map she must treat a circular area of the 9pi^2 in. If 30 miles on the ground is represented by 1 inch on the map, the area in square miles that the crop duster must treat is...?
8100pi miles^2
how?
oh 1 in = 30 mi 1 in * 1 in = 30 mi * 30 mi 9pi (900mi^2) = answer
why would you do 1 by 1 though?
If the questions is asking how to translate a map from inches to miles. You would find the ratio, in this case, 1 inch = 30 miles, and use cross products to show your work. (unless I'm reading the problem completely wrong which is entirely possible, but assuming I'm right...) It would be (1 inch/ 30 miles) = (9pi^2 inches / x) you would multiply 9pi^2 inches with 30 and divide by one, giving you 270pi^2 miles On a different note, is the (^2) squaring the pi or squaring the whole number or acting as a unit?
Tisom has a point I worked the problem fast and placed the squared sign on the "in" because area is measeured as a unit squared such as 1 square mile is an area but can be written as 1 mi^2 so I read the problem as 9pi in^2 1 x 1 is how you get something squared as in 1 in by 1 in along the sides of a square give you 1 in^2 for the area so then replace the 1 in with 30 mi so you can get miles squared
why as 9 pi in^2 because the formula of area of a circle is given as pi(r)^2
just like saying I have $20 in my pocket; how many pennies would that be. So they made up a number 9 pi in^2 and ask you how many square miles and give you a conversion 1 in = 1 mi
