while transferring large amount of data from one drive to another drive in my hard disk, a ticking sound comes from my laptop and then it stops working and shuts down. What should I do?
I would try and contact the company or do a search on Google for solutions. I have had computers tick when the disk starts up. It might be a problem with your hardrive which is not cool. Try and see if your laptop (Dell, Mac, Gateway, etc) has an online diagnostic tool. You can also chat with them for a price. Hope it works out well for you! God bless<><
could be an overheating problem...you may want to try literally putting a fan under your laptop while the data transfers. That's what comes to mind when you say "ticking".... If the laptop or the drive overheats during the transfer it won't work. Also, there are mechanical parts inside the drive and laptop moving very fast, so don't attempt to move your laptop or your drive while making the transfer. You say large amount of data...how large are we talking? Hope it works out for you.
When I'm doing a lot of disk intensive work on a laptop, I usually put it up on blocks so air can circulate all around it. Now that this has happened, a thorough run of a disk utility to map bad blocks would be a good idea. If you've been thinking of upgrading your HD, now would be a good time. You could also try breaking up the copy into a few segments, and let things cool off between segments. Heat is the enemy of computers and similar equipment.
