how do you find square roots without a calculator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use the definition of square roots to find them. To find approximates, you use iteration formulas.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To find a square root of a number, you ask the question: which positive number do I need to multiply with itself (or square) to get this number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but what about numbers that arent perfectly square? like the number 98

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you looking for a numeral approximation for it or an exact value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well im expecting it to be an answer of a number √ then another number. i just cant figure out how to find it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh. Well then you just change whatever's inside the radical. For example 98. √98 = √(2*49) = 7√2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You factorize the number inside the radical into numbers that have integer square roots. In this case 49.

oh!!! i got it!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
