|2a-7|=-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

make two equations... 2a-7=-1 and 2a-7=1 2a=6 so a =3 2a=8 so a=4 a=3,4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The equation doesn't make sense. The stuff in the absolute value bars can never equal a negative number. There are no solutions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

theres a solution because in absolute value equations you have to change the signs. there are two answers i dont really know how to explain it online

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No solution. Try plugging in your solutions to the original equation:\[\left| 2a-7 \right|=-1\]This becomes\[\left| 2(3)-7 \right|=-1 \]So\[\left| -1 \right|=-1\]Or,\[1=-1\]Obviously this is false. Any value of a will still give you a positive value once the absolute value is take. Thus no solutions.

you're right. thank you for your explanation. an absolute value cannot equal a negative number.
