just the other day , i was reading a book named Hackers and Painters by Paul Graham and here is a paragraph from the book on the use of term computer science.

"I've never liked the term "computer science." The main reason I don't like it is
that there's no such thing. Computer science is a grab bag of tenuously related
areas thrown together by an accident of history, like Yugoslavia. At one end you
have people who are really mathematicians, but call what they're doing
computer science so they can get DARPA grants. In the middle you have people
working on something like the natural history of computers—studying the
behavior of algorithms for routing data through networks, for example. And
then at the other extreme you have the hackers, who are trying to write
interesting software, and for whom computers are just a medium of expression,
as concrete is for architects or paint for painters. It's as if mathematicians,
physicists, and architects all had to be in the same department."

Computer Science is the systematic study of the feasibility, structure, expression, and mechanization of the methodical processes (or algorithms) that underlie the acquisition, representation, processing, storage, communication of, and access to information, whether such information is encoded in bits and bytes in a computer memory or transcribed in genes and protein structures in a human cell. The fundamental question underlying all of computing is: what computational processes can be efficiently automated and implemented?
To tackle this seemingly simple question, computer scientists work in many complementary areas. They study the very nature of computing to determine which problems are (or are not) computable. They compare various algorithms to determine if they provide a correct and efficient solution to a concrete problem. They design programming languages to enable the specification and expression of such algorithms. They design, evaluate, and build computer systems that can efficiently execute such specifications. And, they apply such algorithms to important application domains.

there's lot of difference between the word calculate and compute...calculate means to solve by mathematical means..compute means solve especially by mathematical means..a computer does the work of computation...hence it is called computer..:)

The term "computer science" is really a misnomer because it is not really science (since it does not deal with nature) and is not so much the study of computers (the hardware) as of computation itself (the activity of computers).

The term originated historically because a new name was needed to distinguish a field that had grown out of other disciplines (electrical engineering and mathematics) but was distinctly different from each. Some people prefer the terms computation science, information science, etc.
