Physics is derived from the Greek word phúsis which means ‘nature’ , so it might have been called Physics because we study natural or let's say physical world in this branch of Science

As roshan2004 states, it comes from the greek word meaning "nature", since physics is the study of principals underlying nature and natural phenomena. Indeed, physics used to be known as "natural philosophy". In Latin this would be known as "philosophia naturalis" (the original tile of Newtons Principia was Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica" for example, which translated means roughly "The Mathematical Principals of Natural Philosophy"). The word philosophy is derived from the Greek "philosophia" meaning "Love of wisdom" The term Physicist was not coined until 1840 by Rev William Whewell to denote a "cultivator of Physics" to separate it from the term "physician" who is a practitioner of medicine (though confusingly in modern French, "physicien" means physicist).
