OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

Hey guys if you are done with your undergrad, and are in a certain math field, I need to ask a couple of questions..

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

Okay, first of all, how hard is graduate coursework in math?

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

like I don't know right now i'm trying to pick.. should i get a BS in math and MS in math.. or BS in math and MS in computer related area..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wouldn't that depend on whether or not you are interested in computer science?

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

Well i am equally interested in both sort of..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you are going to go for graduate school you need to choose one or the other.

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

But all of this just seems to get harder and harder... even linear algebra which i thought would be easy.. i got lost right as we started basis and subspaces...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think you are really into the abstract stuff, do u... You will get as much math as you can handle in CS

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

Yes, I know that, i hate abstract stuff, i can't visualize things.. professor keeps rambling on about n-th dimension and i get lost..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You should be aware that if you aren't studying software engineering, computer science can be just as abstract and mathematically challenging.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For instance you might be analyzing the computational complexity of algorithms. You will be using analysis, linear algebra etc in computer science as well.

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

oh wow.. oh wow.. well here are my options and I'm running out of time sort of.. well I was planning on getting out of college in 3 years.. Since I am pretty bad at series (the ending of calc2) and the majority of calc 3 (was really good at lagrange though), and pretty weak at all these subspaces and stuff of linear algebra, and now that' im done with all these should I just audit those courses (like sit at them and just learn, and not worry about the grade) and go for math in grad..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to go for what you are the best in and like doing the most. I guess that's all the advice I can offer.

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

yea well i used to think i was good at math last year.. when i got my AP Calculus grades..

OpenStudy (zarkon):

You should take real analysis and abstract algebra. How well you do in those classes is usually a good indicator of how well you will do with graduate work in mathematics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good advice.

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

oh well i guess time will show.. finished first semester of college and still as lost as ever..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also kind of depends on what you want to do for a living.

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

and I don't just want to like go for grad school u know, i want to go for some top grad school... and im either doing math or programming.. hmm at least programming is starting from sort of a clean sheet so i guess i'll see how my C++ class goes..

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

and for those top grad schools, their requirements are crazy.. i ruined my gpa first semester cleaned up a bit 2nd semester (2.9 and 3.9 now i have a 3.4) oh btw i meant finished first year earlier..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In any case realistically speaking, if you plan on doing something computer related as a job you will want to study computer science or software engineering. So yes if you want to focus on what you will be doing later in life that's something to consider when choosing your major etc.

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

i guess.. well let me audit a couple of math courses, and see how it goes with programming.. wish someone hired me, it's really hard for me to even get an internship, im still underage.. 17 haha

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

did one stupid intern last summer though.. sat there for two weeks entering stuff into excel.. at least i got paid..

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

well tnx for the advice guys!

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

ill see how the classes go and move on from there..
