help factoring a certain type of problem? in the style of x^2 -6xn-27n^2. I can't figure it out.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the xs and ns are just there to throw you; focus on the numbers

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what factors of -27 add to get -6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-9 and 3

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good then make an assumption that the problem can be solved and take a stab at setting it up: (x-9)(x+3) ; now if we stick in an "n" we might have something that we can check (x-9n)(x+3n) ; now check the results

OpenStudy (anonymous):

F: x^2 O: 3xn I: -9nx L: -27n^2 = x^2 -6xn - 27n^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aha! thank you.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome :)
