i need to find an example of a quadratic equation that i can use in a real world aplication

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know of anything that varies with the square of something else?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm i could see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea im kinda stumped

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, what about area (as being the most obvious example).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since you talk about area in terms of square footage.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

H = vt + h -.5at^2. Where: H = Height of object above initial position v = initial velocity t = elapsed time h = the initial height of the object above ground a = 9.8 meters/s squared (acceleration due to gravity). An object dropped from a building onto the street below would follow that equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The area of a square varies with the square of the length of the side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also s = ut + 1/2*a*t²

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but it's not a quadratic you'd need the quadratic equation for.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i guess i could use say, how many square feet it would take to do a room in carpet or tile based on the dimensions of the room?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's not as good because it's not a quadratic in only 1 variable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

harkirat's example is better if you are familiar with physics.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the distance equation is a quadratic equation....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not to good with physics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we also use it to calculate the distance covered by a projectile when it traverses a parabolic path..... very important application in today's war torn world....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i could basically use this to come up with an eqution that would compute the time it would take a bullet fired from say a ar-15, based on the amount of fps the the bullet travels and also based on say the weight of the bullet, wind direction and speed and how many yards away the target is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, high accuracy guns/missile firing systems have built in programs which use such equations to calculate automatically the angle etc at which they must be fired to reach a particular target

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what could an example be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At what angle should a bomb weighing ----- should be fired to reach a target ----miles away??
