please help:The larger of 2 numbers is less than twice the smaller. Three times the larger is 6 greater than 6 times the smaller. Find the number, if possible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Larger = x, smaller = y. statement 1: x < 2y (the larger is less than twice the smaller.) statement 2: 3x > 6y + 6 (three times the larger is 6 greater (plus) than 6 times the smaller)

Provided your verbage is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry to interrupt you again, can you please show the solution...tnx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Three times the larger is 6 greater than 6 times the smaller.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[3x=6y+6\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is means "equals" not "greater than"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this tells you that \[x=2y+2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I just realized that. My fault :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first inequality says \[x<2y \] so \[2y+2<2y\] which seems unlikely to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for confirmation only: my answer in the 1st statement is 2x-1 (the larger of 2 numbers is 1 less than twice the smaller). where did you get the value of 2 in x=2y+2. just asking...
